Artificial intelligence has been quietly operating behind the scenes of our applications and gadgets for many years – interpreting our voice commands, recommending music playlists, selecting the next word for us on our phone keyboard – but in recent months, artificial intelligence technology has broken through and entered our lives in all areas.
When artificial intelligence is now creating its own artworks and producing text with a natural sound on demand, we are reaching an entirely new level of sophistication. These powerful tools are integrated into all the applications we use every day, including internet browsers.
Microsoft is leading the way with its Edge browser, but others are quickly following suit, as we will explain. In this article, we will present the built-in features of the browser that bring a touch of AI magic to internet browsing.
Microsoft has added artificial intelligence capabilities to several of its products, and the Edge browser serves as a showcase for what artificial intelligence can add to everyday computing. To ensure that you can access the most up-to-date features, make sure your browser is updated to the latest version of Edge.
### What are the new capabilities?
At the top left corner of the Edge interface, you should see the Bing symbol. Click on it to start interacting with the Bing AI chatbot, powered by ChatGPT. Under the Chat tab, you can use Bing AI as you know it from Alexa or Google: ask a question to get an answer or request inspiration (like “Show me ideas for 5-year-old kids’ party games”).
After each answer, you will see sources on the web where the information was taken from, and the option for the chatbot to try its response again. You will also see some related searches that you may want to try later to clarify or expand on the answer you just received. At the top of each response, you can provide positive or negative feedback on how good it was, and you can copy the text to the keyboard (click on the three dots and then on copy).
### Getting answers that match your needs
The blue Metatato symbol in the bottom left corner allows you to start a new topic, and at this point, you can define the tone of the response: more creative, more balanced, or more precise. If you want to create text (for an email or reminder, for example), switch to the Connection tab: the bot allows you to choose tone, format, and length, and then you can set it to work with the guidance at the top.
For example, suppose you want a short history of Holland written informatively. Make your choices on the screen and then click on Create Draft. At the bottom of the response, there are options to copy the text to the clipboard or try the response again, and you can also click on Add to Site if you want to paste the text in an email or text field.
### Creating Images
There is also a built-in Image Creator in Microsoft Edge now. It is powered by DALL-E technology, and its symbol should appear a few items below the Bing symbol on the right side – if it’s not there, click on the + button to add it to the sidebar. Open the tool and you can describe the image you want to see or click Surprise Me for Edge to come up with something.
After a few seconds, you will receive four suggested images. Click on each one to see up close and find options for sharing, downloading, or saving them in a collection within Edge. The most recently created images are displayed further down the sidebar, so you can return to them if you wish, and there is also the Explore Ideas tab if you need additional inspiration.
All of this is free to use, although you will only receive a certain number of “boosts” per month, which speeds up the process of creating artificial intelligence art. If you run out of boosts, you can get more through Microsoft’s Rewards program – otherwise, you’ll need to be more patient while waiting for the images to regenerate.
