Amazon Q is a secure AI chatbot designed for business use. The idea is that companies can easily connect their existing systems to the new Amazon Q chatbot.

Since the release of ChatGPT, chatbots have quickly gained popularity among private users, but there is still a significant gap in their use by companies, businesses, and IT system administrators. While AI chatbots have enormous potential to increase efficiency and value for customers, they also pose a security risk.

Amazon Q is here to change that. According to AWS, this is the first AI chatbot truly built with businesses in mind. So what does that really mean? Let’s dive in.

What is Amazon Q?

Amazon Q is an AI-powered chatbot generator for workplaces that can be customized to fit a company’s needs. It can be connected to data sources such as Amazon S3, Microsoft 365, GitHub, Dropbox, OneDrive, Salesforce, Slack, and more. Amazon Q prioritizes security and privacy and is not used for training models.

Similar to ChatGPT, Amazon Q can be used to manage conversations, solve problems, create content, and gain insights. However, Amazon Q understands the business in a way that ChatGPT cannot because it is connected to all of the company’s systems. It operates as an entity capable of answering any organization-related question.

For example, you can ask Amazon Q which channel generated the highest online sales revenue and receive a personalized response based on your business data. Another example – you can give it access to your blog and ask it to create short social media posts from the branded content.

Amazon Q provides the source from which it draws the answer. This means you will know which sources it uses and can verify the information.

Amazon Q is integrated with services like AWS Quicksight, allowing you to use it to build dashboards and visual displays for data.

Why is Amazon Q good for developers and IT professionals?

If you are building applications or maintaining an AWS infrastructure, Amazon Q, trained on 17 years of AWS expertise, can teach you how to get started with AWS, which services to use, how to define architecture, troubleshoot errors, and help you write new features.

** These features are part of the Amazon Q Builder plan and are not included in the Amazon Q Business plan.

How can you access Amazon Q?

Amazon Q is currently in beta in the East and West regions of the United States. To check availability in your location, you can start here: Amazon Q

Does Amazon Q consider user permissions?

Yes. Amazon has taken into account the issue of using Amazon Q in companies, and it is aware of which systems they can access. If a team member cannot access data without Q, they also cannot access it with Q.

How much does Amazon Q cost?

The big question! Amazon Q has two plans, Amazon Q Business priced at $20 per user per month, and Amazon Q Builder priced at $25 per user per month. The former is the basic plan that allows you to connect all of the company’s business data. The latter also includes all the knowledge and features of AWS developers.
