This time, a new exciting ability to create a personalized version of ChatGPT, called GPTs.
GPTs are a way to further enhance productivity. If you are using ChatGPT, you have probably already found use cases that help you in your daily activities: it could be optimizing posts, brainstorming ideas for articles, creating sales proposals and variations, code review, help in learning something new, team training, and more.
The new GPTs are here to help create a “unique” version of ChatGPT, tailored to your needs instead of being very general.
This opens up a new range of possibilities for improvement and creating additional revenue streams. In this post, we will see, step by step, how to build a personalized GPT.
What Do You Need to Build a GPT?
1. Subscription to ChatGPT-4 (at this stage, you cannot create GPTs using a free account).
2. Idea for a new GPT – think about your main use cases, or ask ChatGPT to help you brainstorm.
How to Build a Personalized GPT?
Log in to your ChatGPT account. If you don’t have one yet, it’s time to sign up at https://chat.openai.com/auth/login
Make sure you have access to ChatGPT-4, if you don’t, it means you are on the free version and need to upgrade to create your own GPT. You can find the upgrade button and for $20 a month, open a window to a new and exciting world 😊

Search the Explore tab in the left navigation bar and click on it
After clicking, you will see the following screen:
Click on Create a GPT – this is actually the builder that allows you to build a personalized GPT. After creating your chat, you can choose to keep it private, share it via a link, or make it public. OpenAI has stated that they plan to open a GPT store similar to the Apple App Store and pay GPT creators based on the usage in the industry. It’s a good time to start creating 💪.
You can see the GPT you created below in the My GPTs area and in the left navigation bar.
Now the fun begins, after clicking on Create a GPT, the ChatGPT builder will open a chat builder for you, ask you questions, and based on your answers, it will build the chat. It will guide you through each step, and you can continue to request requests and refine it.
The first question will be – what do you want to create. Remember the idea you came up with, now is the time to share it with ChatGPT to bring it to life.
Then it will suggest a name for you, and you can approve it or ask for other names. It’s okay to ask for something and then change your mind and ask it to return to the previous one.
After choosing the name, ChatGPT will immediately generate an image for your GPT, here too you can approve it or instruct it to create additional options for you. The more you explain to it what you want, the better it can provide a response. Just like explaining to a designer.
From here, the chat will ask you more questions about the tone, structure of the answers, and more.
Throughout the chat creation process, you can see the result parallel to the chat area, and once it is ready, you can also start and try it out, while providing the chat with more instructions to refine the answers. For example:
- Always write the answers in bullet points
- At the end of each answer write – Well done, see you next week
- Add an icon at the beginning of each paragraph
And any other guidance you want.
So far, we have talked about the Create area in the ChatGPT builder, now let’s talk about the Configure area:
In the top part of the page, there is a switch that allows you to switch from the Create area to the Configure area. Let’s go through it.
In the Configure area, you will see that ChatGPT has already updated the image, name, description, and even the instructions. Go over them, and if you want to change something, go back to the Create area and ask it to make changes, explain to it in detail what you want to change, just like explaining to someone writing this for you.
In the next part of the Configure area, you will find the following options:
Conversation starters – After creating the chat, in this area, you will see 4 options that the chat offers you to help your users get started. You can edit them and add more if you want.
Knowledge – Here is where the magic happens, you can upload files from which your GPT will extract information and learn. For example, if you have a sales call guide, you can upload it and allow employees to ask questions to the GPT you created and receive answers based on your guide. Wow!
Capabilities – Here you can choose what capabilities your GPT will have. Will it have access to web information? Will it be able to create images and check code? Choose what suits your goals.
Actions – The last and interesting part, here you can connect your GPT to the world and allow it to do more things. This area requires some knowledge of code. For example, you can connect the GPT to an API and use data from there to provide answers. For example, if your chatbot is an advisor for car purchases and you have a calculator that calculates car prices based on different parameters. You can connect them and provide users with relevant prices directly within your GPT.
Saving and Publishing Your Created GPT
After playing with it a bit and feeling ready, it’s time to save and choose who to share it with:
You can keep it private, share it via a link, or make it public so that anyone searching can find you.
At this stage, only subscribers with access to ChatGPT 4 will be able to use it.
